Group exhibition at Sydhavn Station, Copenhagen, Denmark
I was invited by the Danish artist, Mette Juul to participate in the group exhibition "The West in South Harbour" at the exhibition place, "Sydhavn Station".
The exhibition is based on the American West as a concept, myth, landscape, history and home to the dream of the ultimate freedom - both in the America but also the rest of the world. There are invited artists from America and Denmark and common to them all is that they in various ways are fascinated and inspired by the American West. The invited artists are Chelsea Knight, Steffani Jemison, Anna Bak, Adam Jeppesen, Christina Labey, Sylvia Hardy and Mette Juul
Sydhavn Station is an artist-runned exhibition space for Contemporary Art placed at the train station South Harbaour in Copenhagen.
The work i presented at the show was a sculpture made of wood, concrete, steel and leather. The title of the work is "A solid foundation makes a strong house". When thinking about the American west i feel territorial space is a big aspect of the Western American culture. New frontiers, the settler dream, owning land, building your own house and the right to protect and defend your lot. The sculpture is inspired by DIY books on building houses and wilderness cabins and imitates the first steps for a house foundation. On the leather cow hide draped on the beam there is a printed rattlesnake drawing.
When American colonies came to identify more with their own community and liberty than as vassals of the British empire, icons that were unique to the Americas became increasingly popular. The rattlesnake, like the bald eagle and American Indian, came to symbolize American ideals and society.
The Gadsden flag is a historical American flag with a yellow field depicting a rattlesnake coiled and ready to strike. Positioned below the rattlesnake are the words "Dont tread on me". The flag is named after American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden, who designed it in 1775 during the American revolution. Since the Revolution, the flag has seen times of reintroduction as a symbol of American patriotism, a symbol of disagreement with government, or a symbol of support for civil liberties.
The project is supported by the Danish Art Council
