A picture is reportedly stronger than 1000 words, some will probably say that it depends on the picture and the words. And sometimes the correct words may be lacking. We may feel misunderstood and have difficulty formulating ourselves. We feel lost in translation or there are simply no words for what we feel.
When the purely linguistic communication fails, tools like body language, tone of voice, facial mimic and visual illustrations can help the common understanding. Art can provide the opportunity for a more poetic, open communication, and it can provide space for translating feelings and states that are less concrete and giving us room for abstraction and interpretation.
The title of the group exhibition: "Writers block" refers to a block, a collection of artists, all working with text, language or the narrative in their art practice. But also to the actual writing blockage; -The inhibitory feeling many artists may experience in the creative process, as an author, musician, visual artist etc.
The creative blockage when you feel ponderous and uninspired is an indifferent frustration about your own media and your own abilities. A doubt about whether something is really good enough or important enough to be said or produced, or whether the work can speak to the viewer in the way it was intended.
The works in the exhibition span in different ways and means of communicating, and comments on situations where communication becomes redundant, unnecessary or simply impossible. There are works that do not necessarily use writing and text in the usual legible form, but comments on the actual physical act of writing, making signs and communicating. The exhibition's artists work in various media such as video, sculpture, installation, painting and textile. The works range from humorous, audience engaging, and philosophical to emotional, personal and poetic.
